A chronic condition causing bladder pressure, bladder pain and sometimes pelvic pain, interstitial cystitis is not life-threatening and does not lead to cancer. Because symptoms are always present, however, patients need to develop coping skills. Signs and symptoms include:

  • Chronic pain in the pelvis or between the vagina and anus
  • A persistent, urgent need to urinate
  • Frequent urination, often of small amounts, throughout the day and night
